With the opening of Sanctum of Domination, it is time to once again look at DPS ranking data for the new raid, based on data of the week of July 6th. For this analysis we will use data provided by Warcraft Logs Heroic Sanctum of Domination statistics.Warcraft Logs' Sanctum of Domination Statistics Page
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the Sanctum of Domination Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs under the Shadowlands Patch 9.1 partition for Heroic difficulty in the week of July 6th.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Sanctum of Domination in Shadowlands Season 2, looking at the data of the most recent week in the raid.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
- Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
- This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
- The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 2, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Spec Analysis for Week of July 6th
With the opening of Sanctum of Domination, we've invited the class writers from the current top three specs of statistics to talk about their specs in Sanctum of Domination, Assassination Rogue, Shadow Priest, and Demonology Warlock.
Assassination Rogue

So, as we get the statistics for the first week of Sanctum of Domination on Normal and Heroic, Assassination Rogues are shown at the top. This is kinda cool to see as this is probably the best start into a new tier that Rogues have had in several years. All Rogue specs are looking solid, actually, but Assassination seems to have the smallest range. While their maximum DPS is not necessarily the highest, their minimum is really good.
I think this effect can be attributed to the strengths that Assassination carries over from the late Castle Nathria tier. They continue to bring excellent single target damage and their Doomblade legendary remains a top one. Then, there's also the fact that Assassination is a great progression spec for new content as its usually slow pacing allows for more brain capacity to focus on mechanics and understanding the new bosses.
That said, and while I expect Assassination to stay a great spec, the WCL charts this week are really just a snapshot that is bound to change multiple times. As I said, Assassination Rogues already have a top legendary to use. However, covenant legendaries will be unlocked in the Mythic week and other specs like Subtlety will receive new boosts once they can get their hands on it. New soulbind powers will continue to unlock over the next weeks as well and then there is loot luck like getting the Edge of Night dagger from Sylvanas. I do expect a rise for Subtlety Rogues in the ranks leading to a smaller difference in the number of parses (that still favor Assassination heavily). I don't really know what to expect from specs of other classes but I can imagine new unlocks shifting results up or down in the stats across the board.
I would not think too hard about the order of specs on a first-week statistics page for HC. Things are bound to change and fluctuate but one thing can be deduced nevertheless. Rogues as a whole are having a solid start into the Sanctum. As a class that does not really have good raid-wide utility and cooldowns and relies on solid damage to be picked, this is good news. I am excited to see how the stats develop over the course of the next week.
Shadow Priest

Hello! I am Ellipsis, moderator for WarCraftPriests, the Priest Discord. I work on Shadow Priest theorycraft alongside the Shadow Team, you can check out our work here! I am often active on the WarCraftPriests discord server and free to answer any questions or queries related to Shadow Priest or any content in any of my guides. I raid in The Misty Moon on EU Tarren-Mill (Formerly The Misty Moon Massive) and have raided between top 50 and 300 since Legion but I've been playing Shadow Priest in some capacity for going on 14 years. Outside of WoW, I spend most of my time listening to music, especially seeking out interesting new things I haven't heard before! Ice Bear. |
As expected, Shadow's major strength in the new raid appears to be its Single Target. With the vast majority of bosses being either pure Single Target, or Single Target with the periodic add spawns which play into Twist of Fate. Even on encounters where Shadow appears to perform poorly for damage overall, the damage to bosses is still very high. The most obvious examples of this are Fatescribe Roh-Kalo and Soulrender Dormazain, where despite a combined ranking in the bottom 5 for overall damage, boss damage is top 5, even in spite of both fight's demands on our relatively low mobility.
The standout encounter for Shadow Priest, at least early on, appears to be Painsmith Raznal. A Single Target fight with numerous opportunities to proc Twist of Fate thanks to wall of rolling balls that spawns numerous times in every phase of the encounter. Shadow is also aided on this fight by the duration of each phase lining up with our rather unique cooldown timings, as well as a final phase Bloodlust buffing up our execute.
With a relatively small number of guilds having killed Kel'Thuzad, and so few having killed Sylvanas Windrunner that logs for her aren't counted towards to the average rankings, the fights Shadow looked questionable on are still too hard to predict. Sylvanas being a mostly Single Target fight looks good for Shadow, but the lack of an execute phase, and massive AoE damage requirement at the end of Phase 1 are marks against it. Kel'Thuzad could be another Stone Legion generals, with too many chaotic short lived add spawns for dots to have much of an impact, or it could be the perfect place to use Korayn's First Strike and dish out some real damage.
Given the nerfs which have already been announced for Shadow at the beginning of Mythic week, and also some of the hype that surrounded the spec going into the tier, I expected Shadow's boss by boss performance to be higher. Unlike a lot of specs set to perform well in Sanctum, Shadow already has its best in slot legendary and isn't poised to gain that much power as the tier moves on. Shadow's biggest asset going into Mythic Week is Twist of Fate, paired with its Single Target damage and unique cooldown timings. Mythic has longer, more coordinated fights with longer living adds for Shadow to get higher uptime.
Beyond just damage, Shadow's survivability is a major asset. Short cooldown defensives and passive self healing have been incredibly valuable in heroic week, especially on Painsmith Raznal with the constantly high damage taken. I expect the spec to continue to perform well as the tier progresses, but we do need to wait and see what the new covenant legendaries bring.
Demonology Warlock
About the Author
Heroic Age Season 2 Episode 1
I am known around these parts of the internet by my in-game name of Not. I have been playing a Warlock since the start of Cataclysm and have not really deviated from it since. Over the years I became more involved in theorycrafting to the point of developing and maintaining a resource dedicated to all Warlocks, Lock One Stop Shop. You can catch me online on Twitter, Twitch, and Youtube. |
You can really see this come to light on fights like The Tarragrue, The Nine, Remnant of Ner'zhul, Painsmith Raznal and Guardian of the First Ones where priority damage is important. Wilfred's Sigil of Superior Summoning really enables Demonology to very consistently have their power spike available to them. This playstyle will still be relevant on some bosses throughout Mythic but a fair number of encounters will have you looking away from the priority damage and more into spread cleave or multi target fights where Demonology really starts to fall off considerably. One thing to take into consideration is that you, generally, are able to push buffs into one person more easily in Heroic which vastly helps Demonology.

The Heroic Legend of Arslan is probably one of the most anticipated works of the new season. It's based on one of the most beloved fantasy novel series in Japan, adapted into manga by Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame. It has all the bloody battles, epic fantasy mechanics and ideals clashes of a Game of Thrones story. One major difference is its idealistic protagonist Prince Arslan, who resembles Edward Elric in more than just appearance. He's a peaceful and idealistic but clever kid in a cruel world that plans to throw his worldview for a loop. It's clear that the story isn't totally against him though. The big mean guys around him don't exactly succeed in their cruel aims, either.
In short, there are a lot of parallels to draw here with Fullmetal Alchemist, and it's obvious why Arslan would appeal to that story's creator. That being said, The Heroic Legend of Arslan is not really an 'Arakawa work.' The manga's art is unmistakably hers, but its writing comes courtesy of the original novelist, Yoshiki Tanaka. Over here, he's probably best known as the mind behind Legend of the Galactic Heroes. In the first episode, Tanaka sets up the sort of tense political clash he's known for: Arslan meets and nearly befriends an escaped Lusitanian prisoner after his country defeats them in battle. Lusitania is known as a land of religious fanatics, and Arslan asks him to explain his zeal. The slave boy says they believe everyone is equal, except for those who don't follow their faith, who deserve to die. Arslan finds the first part admirable, but says the other part doesn't make any sense. It's a good foundation for the boys' petty battles in the first episode, and the bigger ones to come.
It's clear Tanaka did a lot of research on his choice of setting. Suite life of zack and cody season 2 torrent download. Pars and Lusitania's conflict is rooted in the actual religious conflicts of the ancient and medieval Middle East. Christianity and Islam spread so quickly around the region largely due to their doctrines of class equality—in sharp contrast to the highly stratified societies of their time. It was radical in a slave-owning world to say they were equal to their masters, and immensely appealing to people on society's bottom rungs. At the same time, those religions were touted as the One True Path in contrast to the beliefs they supplanted. Hence all the wars, conquering, and strife.
I hope the series continues to give the Lusitanians their due, and represent this ideological conflict with Pars fairly as a struggle between religious tolerance and social equality. It's a compelling, meaty thing for this kind of show. The second episode shifts its focus to military strategy though, and the Lusitanians are back to being faceless baddies. From what I know of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Yoshiki Tanaka is big into talking heads verbally hashing out ideas with each other. This makes for some dialogue that moves so fast it's a little hard to follow, but the gist is that Arslan's loyal bodyguard doesn't trust the king's strategy, and is seen as a traitor based on a tip from the actual traitor to the crown (as we learn later). He has to prove himself on the battlefield to regain his title.
This sets up another interesting conflict for the major characters, reminiscent of last season's Yona of the Dawn. The current Parsian king, Andragoras III, is a ruthless, take-no-prisoners kind of a guy. That makes him a capable military leader, and explains his domination in that arena, but it also means he can't listen to competing ideas, and dismisses anyone who dares question his authority as a traitor. That's a recipe for major military blunders. On the other hand, while Prince Arslan is more understanding and forgiving, he's also a dove. He doesn't like killing people and prefers avoiding it at all costs. That's not the best attitude to have when your country is constantly at war. Presumably, Arslan's story will be about him growing toward a middle path. He can balance that compassionate, peaceful attitude with the need for might when his domain is threatened. He's already taking steps toward this, when he's forced to kill a Lusitanian soldier that attacks him in the second episode.
All this would be easier to stomach and follow if the series' visual presentation were doing it any favors. Hiromu Arakawa's really distinctive designs make this difficult. It's not just that everyone looks like a character from Fullmetal Alchemist. (Arslan aside, his bodyguard is Kimblee, and the king looks like Izumi's husband or that one ape chimera guy.) The character designs are repetitive even among the cast, especially in the battle scenes with their helmets covering their hair. It took me a second to realize that the traitor, Khayrun, was not the same person as Arslan's bodyguard Daryun. The names are close, the faces are close, and it's easy to get confused. The Heroic Legend of Arslan has some impressive and lush backgrounds, befitting its ancient Near Eastern setting. It can afford to step it up a bit with the character designs and also the awkward CG. It's getting better as of episode 2, but that falcon soaring in was still too noticeable.
If the Fullmetal Alchemist resemblance gets more viewers in front of screens though, it's all the better. While I think Arakawa's faces work better in their original manga form, their rounded cartoonish look does provide humanity for such a dense, dark conflict. As pretty as the old OVAs were, they ran out of steam and were never finished. Such a popular story deserves a full anime reboot, and I think it's succeeding so far.
I do hope that there's more stuff like the first episode than the second one going forward. Arslan's conflict with the slave boy is shown as much as it's told, both visceral and immediately understandable to the audience. If it's all nobles arguing and walls of CG soldiers instead, my patience will wear thin. This show has a lot of potential to pull in a wide audience, so I hope it uses that.
